Wimby Day One Matchups

Veteran Fabio Fognini is far from finished at 37 as he scores a 61 63 75 domination of Luca van Assche.

Young gun Jerry Shang continues to rise to be the future Asian no. 1 and much more with a 75 64 64 win vs Christian Garin.

Denis Shapovalov showed flashes of his former elite level by crushing 19 seed Nico Jarry 61 74 64. Another tough early round loss for the Chilean in a Grand Slam.

Borna Coric – remember him? – beat Fernando Meligeni Alves in three sets.

Frances Tiafoe beat Matteo Arnaldo from two sets down, a much needed big win for the fading American.

Gael Monfils, 37, vs Adrian Mannarino, 36, split the first two sets 64 36.

Grigor Dimitrov blasted out Dusan Lajovic 63 64 75.

There will be no Wimbledon for Aryna Sabalenka, a surprise withdrawal due to a right shoulder problem.

    GOTTA LOVE THE FOG HERE!

Figured Broady would get past struggling Van Zandschulp but alas… Broady loves grass and Wimby was his moment.

I Wouldn’t think Jarry’s game would translate to grass like Shapo’s… but what do i know.

Fogger is looking good since he went with the Dennis Rodman hair color change. Demolition Man can do some damage. Shapo has been great on grass before, gave Djokovic a tough battle few years ago. Jarry is a great player prone to some dud efforts. Nakashima suddenly making some noise again after two years of silence. Looks like Coco has a free pass to the final. Again. Wawrinka swept out Charlie Broom. When you think about it Rafa skipping Wimby to practice on clay for Olympics is a show of weakness. The king of clay needs a head start and extra training on clay? Sure he’s old but Jimbo was 39 when he made SF at US Open. For Rafa to surrender a shot at Wimbledon is a sign of weakness.

Based on what you’ve seen so far, Scoop, how far do you think Djokovic can go? 😏

Sam, he’s done well in the practice sets and the exo match vs Medvedev, you have to consider him a big favorite with Carlos. He’s my pick to win.

Hope you’re right, Scoop. I mean, that would be one amazing comeback! 😎

As expected, Murray decided to default to avoid the 26 26 26 loss to Machac, he realized the form and confidence are just not there to win singles matches anymore. Better to quit now than have the final image at Wimbledon as a three set loss to a guy nobody knows. Murray fought for years to avoid this ending, the fight is finally over for one of the great champions of the best tennis era ever.

Scoop, surely you know Machac is a solid player, devastating forehand, solid mentally, I would say a future top 20 maybe even top 10 fixture… He gives everyone a tough time and as my memory recals, Murray was frustarted playing him earlier this year in a tough loss.

Do you think Murray will retire immediately? Or continue for rest of season (after healing)? Olympics?

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 3, 2024 at 8:44 am

Cory, Machac is a rising star, he’s beaten Djokovic, he has a top coach in Daniel Vacek, totally under the radar. Murray knew he was going to lose again. Murray will play doubles and mixed with Emma which indicates he’s physically fine to play. He has nothing left in singles, he’s cooked. I’d be surprised if he tries any more singles. Wimbledon should be his final tournament, he has no business wasting a spot in the Olympics.
